Community

People Helping People is an international organization that serves those in need in Indianapolis and around the world. The organization helps victims of natural disasters and economic hardship. Matt is proud to serve as a board member and volunteers in projects, including traveling to El Salvador each year to help build community centers, repair houses, support an orphanage, a burn unit, a women’s cancer hospital, and more. What’s special about this organization is that there are no overhead costs—every dollar is raised and used to support those in need, with supporters donating their own time and resources. They are committed to The HOPE Equation (H^3+E)F, helping people with housing, hunger, healthcare, + education, multiplied by faith.

The BlakeStrong Bowell Fund was established to honor Blake Bowell’s courageous 4 year battle with brain cancer. Blake was an all-state runner at Franklin Central H.S. in Indianapolis and received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy. While there he was severely injured during training exercises and received an Honorable Medical Discharge with full Veteran status. Not shortly after leaving Annapolis, Blake became sick with a rare form of Glioblastoma (Sarcoma). He took on this new challenge with dignity and a level of faith that touched many people throughout his journey.

Blake passed away on June, 5, 2017 at the age of 25. However, the story is far from finished as his life continues to inspire many! Blake and his father Mark, while at a music festival on Lake Shafer in Monticello Indiana, 'ShaferStock',  in the summer of 2014 following numerous discussions,  formed what was the foundation to what is now the BlakeStrong Bowell Fund.  In the early days of BlakeStrong Bowell Fund; fundraisers held raised money for American Cancer Society and The Refuge to further research and help to provide family support.  In the Spring of 2017 the BlakeStrong Bowell Fund 501c3 was formed, the first Franklin Central Student Athlete Scholarships were awarded and Music Jam 12.5 (12.5 inches from the heart to the brain) was held to benefit programs conducting research and providing awareness of stroke and brain cancer.

Commanderie logo

The Commanderie de Bordeaux aux États-Unis d'Amérique was organized in 1957 by a small group of lovers of Bordeaux wines and became a New York corporation in 1959. Since, it has grown to include 34 chapters and some 1200 members located in different cities around the United States. It is also affiliated with a worldwide network of 82 Commanderies in 26 countries under the overall patronage of the Bordeaux-based Grand Conseil du Vin de Bordeaux (GCVB).

The members ("Commandeurs") of these chapters get together periodically for dinners (called "parlements" from the French verb parler, to talk) and other events in order to enjoy, discuss and learn more about the wines of the various Bordeaux regions in their different vintages. Through their passion for these wines, the Commandeurs become emissaries of the Bordeaux winemakers to their several localities, with the goal of broadening the appreciation of the wines of Bordeaux in the US.

Matt is a proud and active Commandeur of the Indianapolis chapter.
